Video: A Green Drink for the American Spirit

Dear brothers and sisters,

How lonely are the streets! As I walk along, rather than say  “good morning” people jump off the pavement. In place of the warmth of a  smile and a word of kindness there is deafening silence. Have people ever been more isolated, distant and remote? Let’s ask ourselves which one of us has a close friend, even one friend in whom they can confide?

Social distancing - we’ve always had it.

In this our 245th year we’ve become a nation of strangers.

And now with more people working from home we’ve become still more isolated. Is it any wonder that people hate their jobs. This is tragic because it is purposeful, creative activity in conjunction with brothers and sisters that makes us more fully human.

Then there is the hysteria; we see it everywhere.

Indeed it has reached fever pitch.

The social fabric is torn; there is a rise in deaths of despair from drugs and suicide. It is tragic that anxiety, depression and suicide are at an all-time high.

Unbelievably, over 70 million Americans — 42 percent of the adult population — are obese and another 30% are overweight. Moreover, 15 million Americans are morbidly obese.

Sadly enough the average lifespan has fallen for the last three years.

The birth rate is the lowest since they began keeping numbers back in 1908.

Out of these depths we choose life with a green drink. We begin by juicing  carrots, beets and apples. We then add orange and grapefruit slices and blend. The blender brims with a rosy red liquid. And then the greens - lettuce, two types of kale and red dandelions. We blend again.

We drink a toast to the edible schoolyards, community gardens, and edible landscapes of coming bright years.
