Video: An Edible Schoolyard for the American Spirit

Dear brothers and sisters,

During the Second World War our forebears planted 20 million Victory Gardens across the United States. Victory Gardens helped win the war as fresh, homegrown vegetables supplied 40% of the produce grown in the United States by 1944.

The price of organic produce in stores tells us that we had better start planting.

Let’s then plant a Victory Garden to provide our families with vibrantly alive kale, parsley, lettuce, celery, beets, spinach and chard.

Let’s plant a Victory Garden by way of healing this American earth.

Let’s plant a Victory Garden to express our certainty that one day Hetch Hetchy will be restored: A valley comparable to Yosemite in grandeur and beauty - beneath a man-made lake it lies, full fathom five.

Let’s plant a Victory Garden because we know in our hearts, that one day, America shall be an edible schoolyard for the human spirit.

Let’s plant a Victory Garden by way of saying “yes!” to life.

May we close by wishing you and family a Thanksgiving of good health, prosperity and success,

Jesse Schwartz PhD
