Video: A Talk with Judith Redmond, A Magnificent Family Farmer

Dear brothers and sisters,

We were privileged the other day to talk with Judith Redmond with Full Belly Farm. This is one of the finest organic family farms in California. They grow an enormous variety of vegetables and fruits. Our local farmer’s markets thrive with their produce. We talked to Judith about the growth of their enterprise and their challenges. We touched upon the watering down of organic standards in particular regard to hydroponics and CAFOs-contained animal feeding operations.

We feel you’ll be impressed with Judith’s breadth of knowledge and devotion to bringing more and more aliveness to her soil, plants and animals.

We came away impressed with the truth of what Thomas Jefferson remarked over 200 years ago, “Cultivators of the earth are the most valuable citizens. They are the most vigorous, the most independent, the most virtuous, and they are tied to their country and wedded to its liberty and interests by the most lasting bonds.

With good wishes for vibrant good health to you and family,

Recipe: Healthy 3 Ingredient Chocolate Banana Ice Cream

by The Endless Meal

Chocolate Banana Ice Cream tastes EXACTLY like chocolate ice cream and is made with only 3 ingredients and they’re all healthy. My favorite way to eat it is as soft serve right out of the blender but you can also freeze so it’s firm enough to scoop into ice cream cones.

Ingredients

4 frozen bananas, peeled
1/4 cup cocoa powder
2 tablespoons almond butter (can sub peanut butter)
Optional: 1/4 cup milk of choice (only use if you are making this in a food processor)

Instructions
Chocolate Banana Ice Cream in your Blender

Place the frozen bananas, cocoa powder, and almond butter into your high-powered blender.
Blend the bananas on high speed using the plunger to push the bananas down as needed. After 2-3 minutes the ice cream will run smoothly.
Either eat right away or freeze for 2 hours so that it is hard enough to scoop into cones.

John Muir Organic Trail Mix

Now with Chocolate Covered Raisins!

We have created an organic mix of nuts, dried fruit, and edible seeds to honor John Muir, one of America’s great prophets and seers.

The John Muir Trail in Yosemite National Park passes along a succession of alpine meadows watered by the Tuolumne River and bordered by mountain ranges. To walk on this majestic trail is to gain a feeling of warmth and gladness.

Golden Prairie Gluten Free Rolled Oats – Organic

These oats have more protein and healthy fats, and less carbohydrates than most other whole grains. This grain is high in beta-glucans, and contains more soluble fiber than any other grain.

Aside from making a hearty cooked breakfast cereal, rolled oats are a great addition to breads, or as a basis for energy bars and granola.

Cashew Butter 8oz – Alive & Organic

Sundried cashews have been transformed into a butter that retains its quintessential cashew flavor. Try it on apple slices, celery sticks or a wedge of persimmon.

Black Beans – Organic

Our Local Organic Black Beans are grown by an Elmira farmer and inventor. Although he prefers his privacy and is publicity-shy, his thoughts and discoveries can be accessed online, where he openly shares Appropriate Technology for Small and Subsistence Farms at http://www.efn.org/~itech/.

The website states that his designs are public domain, a gift to humanity, and encompass a wide spectrum of topics, from how to grow organic black beans in the valley, to solutions for weed control and pests, to instructions on how to build a wood dryer, grain huller, grain thresher, and winnower. He has been growing black beans for Hummingbird for so many years, we’ve lost count!

Coconut Flour – Alive & Organic

Coconut flour is a delicious, gluten-free and beneficial alternative to other flours.

It is high in fiber, protein and healthy fats and free from wheat and other grains. It is also low in sugar, digestible carbohydrates and calories. Plus, this flour has a low score on the glycemic index.

This makes it a favorite among Paleo dieters, gluten-free eaters — including those with celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity — those with digestive problems, anyone with a nut allergy, those with diabetes, vegetarians and just about everyone else in between.

In reality, coconut flour is not actually “flour” in the way we normally think of it. It contains zero grains and consists of 100 percent pure coconut meat.

Black Sesame Tahini – Alive & Organic

Our Organic Raw Black Sesame Tahini is a glorious, shining black. Made from organic UNHULLED black sesame seeds. The taste is profoundly sesame – robust and enlivening. This is our original creation (others have since tried to copy it). We presented it to the organic food industry at the Natural Products Expo in Anaheim, California in March 2003. People were delighted, they called it “caviar”!

Sesame Tahini – Alive & Organic

Tahini breaks out as a Mainstream Ingredient, as consumers look for more unique foods to try. Use it in alive pies, yogurt bars and smoothies. Think of tahini date cookies; combine with cooked chickpeas for hummus, combine with honey for halva.

Made from alive, organic sesame seeds grown by Mexican family farmers. We make our tahini slowly, over several days; we slice, we do not grind.

Pumpkin Seed Butter – Alive & Organic

A delightful pumpkin seed spread made from American pumpkin seeds. Very nourishing and energizing. A balanced source of good protein. High in zinc, a mineral that aids the healing process. Delicious, nutritious, nutty-flavored pumpkin seeds have diuretic properties; diuretics clearly help reduce heart attacks and strokes, an American Journal of Cardiology study says (Wall St.Journal,1/4/05,p.1).

Studies have also shown that pumpkin seeds, which contain amino acids, steroidal compounds, and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, may lower the risk of certain types of kidney stones and improve symptoms associated with enlarged prostates. Additionally, pumpkin seeds reportedly contain significant amounts of L-tryptophan. Some studies have also found pumpkin seeds to prevent arteriosclerosis and regulate cholesterol levels.

We Welcome Investors

The U.S. organic market in 2018 broke through the $50 billion mark for the first time, with sales hitting a record $52.5 billion, up 6.3 percent from the previous year, according to the 2019 Organic Industry Survey released by the Organic Trade Association.
Characteristics that are identified with organic, such as clean, transparent, fresh and sustainable helped boost organic sales to unprecedented levels, according to the survey.

New records were made in both the organic food market and the organic non-food market. Organic food sales reached $47.9 billion, for an increase of 5.9 percent. Sales of organic non-food products jumped by 10.6 percent to $4.6 billion. The growth rate for organic continued to easily outpace the general market: in 2018, total food sales in the U.S. edged up just 2.3 percent while total non-food sales rose 3.7 percent.
Almost 6 percent (5.7%) of the food sold in this country is now organic. Today’s consumers can find organic products – food and non-food items — in every aisle of their grocery stores. They can choose organic in their favorite big box store, their club warehouse store, even in their neighborhood convenience store, and increasingly on the internet. Organic is no longer a niche market.

Thanks to your kind support, we too are growing. We wish to hire more teamworkers and to purchase tools and equipment. We are seeking long term, stable capital. If taking a strategic position in the organic food industry appeals to you, let’s talk!
